For the past 6 years, since I my periods stopped I have only slept in 2 hour stints. I am lucky in that after I wake (and I wake as if I am wide awake) I go straight back to sleep so am not tired during the day. I have tried everything under the sun, homeopathy (I am a homeopath), herbal, essential oils, yoga, diet, pilates, EFT and even resorted once to a short course of sleeping pills and nothing has ever given me any longer sleep. The only time I slept through the night was a year after my periods stopped when I had very slight bleed for a week. That is why I associate this as hormonal and with menopause.

What is it that seems to wake you? Just being wide awake? Wanting to pee? Brain activating? Getting hot? Do you have any idea? Or is there no pattern? Something that worked for me to a large extent was (sorry for this) to have a cold (about 21 degrees) bath before bed. It's not comforting. However, I think that it takes your core body temperature down to such a degree that you sleep more soundly. If you try this. Please let me know how it goes for you. I have a friend who reckoned she entirely managed her hot flushes - her major menopausal symptom, this way. And have you ever heard of chillow? Some people swear by it.

Nothing wakes me that I know of. When I wake it is exactly after 2 hours usually and then the next 2 hours to the minute etc. I am wide awake but go straight back to sleep. It has been suggested that it is my natural sleep rhythm and at the point OI wake it is very light and that before menopause it is not noticed whereas after it is. I do go for a pee the first time I wake but that is it. The cold bath would not suit me as if I go to bed and my feet are cold I can't get to sleep. I have to wear socks if my husband is away!! I need to be warm in bed.(except during the flushes which are more frequent towards the morning) I have heard of a chillow and thought about getting one but the flushes don't last that long.

I don't seem to be able to sleep. I go to bed and sleep immediately and about half an hour later I wake up. I'm wide awake and then can't sleep again for ages. I have heard that that is because I don't have enough Melatonin. But I have heard that you shouldn't take it. Any suggestions?

Yes, Leila. Sadly because it is extracted from a gland in the brain the whole BSC scare made it a no no. You could try Passiflora 6 or even 'sleep' 6 which are homeopathic remedies. I'd love to hear if they are any good.
